April 23rd – Juice Cleanse – Friend or Foe?


Dear Diary,

 When I first moved to LA, I was bright-eyed and bushy tailed. I embraced every Hollywood food trend: raw, Himalayan sea salt, goji berries, acai…You name it. On a visit home to Chicago, I was ranting about the power of that here said salt, when my father pulled me aside and asked, if I’d lost my brain in California. I didn’t want to admit that may be the case, but after he reminded me of my chemistry classes; I realized it was a close call.

Salt is salt.  Its chemical composition is NaCl- sodium and chlorine – no mountain in a far off land will change that. So people are paying $15 for the hype, but sadly not the truth. This lesson has taught me to question everything people say…Yes, I learned to take things with a grain of salt…from salt.

So let’s talk about juice cleanses and “detoxing” your body. When you were little, you ate dirt, you licked the floor and were a little rug rat. It’s when our bodies started building immunities to germs living on you and yes, inside you. So when a “juice cleanse” claims to detox your body, I can’t help, but question its validity.  Your body is full of billions of bacteria; it’s a pretty complex system…so it’s not hard to see why I didn’t find much scientific evidence supporting the detox diet; five days of drinking only five 12oz veggie and fruit juices concoctions.

On the flip side, do I think drinking green juice from kale, romaine, cucumber and spinach is bad…of course not. I mean, it’s better than eating a bag of potatoes chips. You don’t necessarily receive the fiber from the veggies and fruits, but you do receive the vitamins and sugar. And you will lose weight drinking only 5 juices a day, because you are taking in 700-900 calories and most people burn 1200-2000 calories a day WITHOUT working out.  So that’s just simple math.

The bright eyed girl always wants to believe some tree in China or rare herb holds the key to weight loss success…but the truth is you’ll only lose weight if you burn more calories than you eat. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m trying to save your wallet from the hype.
