Homemade Sugar Scrubs – Bringing Some Southern Charm Home

Pinterest
sugar scrbs

Dear Diary,

This weekend I was in Hilton Head for my boyfriend’s cousin’s wedding (a mouthful, I know). Wise people know there are two things that create a joyous family gathering: unconditional love and alcohol. Luckily, there was never a dry event…so the trip went fabulously, expect for my headache from the week-long booze cruise and a couple encounters with some very large cucarachas… I survived.

I was definitely a fish out of water in the South. I’d never heard of, “Junior League,” or eaten fried green tomatoes or referred to anyone as a “heehaw.” But my indoctrination into the Southern way of life wasn’t all about fried food and colorful vernacular. I also experienced Southern Charm; sincere hellos, southern chivalry and humid, muggy air filled with scents of bacon frying and pecan pies. I loved it!

Trying to be an SFG health-conscious individual in the South, was as successful as Aubrey O’Day’s line of pet hair dyes… How do you say no to buffets of fried food, fresh steamed crab drizzled in butter and oh, I already mentioned the pecan pie with Crisco, no doubt?  In the South, sugar is the starting point and butter is the main course.

So while I had a week long love affair with butter, my thighs have told me it’s time to end it. But I did discover one way to add a little southern sugar to my life, sugar scrubs.  In every restaurant we dined, the  ladies room offered sugar scrubs in a cute jam jar, no less. So I’ll be damned… if I can’t eat sugar, I might as well smell like it. They are so easy to make and you can change the smells by adding different oils and different essential oils:) ENJOY!!!

The equation:

2 parts sugar + 1 part oil + essential oils = Homemade Body Scrub

 1. Choose your oil

  • Avocado oil – great for dry skin
  • Coconut oil – great for moisturizing
  • Jojoba oil – great for moisturizing for all skin types
  • Olive oil – great for moisturizing (but strong smell)
  • Sesame oil – great for its anti-oxidant properties
  • Almond oil – great for moisturizing for all skin types
  • Vitamin E oil – great for healing & moisturizing

2. Pick your sugar or salt

  • Fine Salt
  • Table Salt
  • Sea Salt
  • Kosher Salt
  • Epsom Salt
  • Brown Sugar
  • Raw Sugar

3.  Add 5 drops of essential oils, here are some of my suggestions

  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Jasmine
  • Chamomile
  • Vanilla Extract

XOXO

Dear Diary,

This week we’re featured on Lauren Conrad’s blog again (If you missed our other posts check them out here and here) – this time with tricks on how to stay beautiful and stress-free during the chaotic holiday season. Well you might not actually be stress-free, but at least you won’t look as frazzled… We feature a variety of our DIY concoctions, but I just couldn’t stop there. Read on for my fun holiday inspired spa treatment that’s all natural and edible!

With the holidays just around the corner everything pumpkin is completely acceptable…so why not flavored lip scrub in pumpkin spice?! (Or as I apparently pronounce it: “Punk-in”)

Pumpkin pie, oh my!

Below you will see the ingredients in the wrong measuring spoons. This was not to confuse you, just rather look pretty next to each other when I only have one set… my bad. But it is cute right?! ;)

pumpkinspice

Need:

(I always double or triple this recipe for gifts or to store for the season)

* 2 tbs coconut oil

* 1 tbs brown sugar

* 1 tbs agave/honey

* 1 tps pumpkin pie spice

Rub it in circular motions over your lips. You should feel the sugar working into those dry spots. The sugar helps to soften and exfoliate, while the coconut oil moisturizes and rehydrates. Agave nectar and honey are full of antioxidants which have anti-aging properties, as well as soothing and clarifying.

We’ve been getting requests for videos, which we will try and deliver on. Here’s my first stab at a new one… Don’t judge me too hard, it’s been awhile y’all…

Secrets to Glowing Summer Skin

Dear Diary,

My secrets to Glowing Summer Skin?  Blueberries on my face, and cucumbers in my water. Ha, I’m serious!  Moving across the country, took a toll on my skin; crazy humidity (that I had completed forgotten about while living out west), has taken a toll on my skin; And summer wedding, after summer wedding, with caked on make-up and sun exposure galore has taken it’s toll as well.  It took a couple weeks of sleep and a few summer secrets in order to get my skin back into tip-top shape!

The key to perfect summer make-up– is to look make-up-less. This means keeping make-up simple.  The only way that works, is to have radiant, balanced skin.  This felt near to impossible during my first few weddings of the summer…  I wanted to look fresh, youthful and glowing, but a few days before the first big event, I started to panic.  My skin was red and irritated, and in no shape to be “make-up-less.”  Even worse, the summer heat and humidity would make any caked on make-up sweat right off, leaving me looking more like a drag queen than a sophisticated bridesmaid.  Something had to be done:

Glowing Summer Skin Secrets revealed:

1. DRINK A LOT (LIKE A LOT A LOT) of WATER

Add some extra vitamins, and keep your water tasty, by adding my favorite (spa-like) ingredient: CUCUMBER.  this refreshing vegetable has kept me hydrated all season long!

2.  SPF, SFG’s.   This is an easy one.  We all know to use SPF, but before a long day of wedding photos and festivities, I noticed a lot of my girlfriends skipped the step of summer sun protection.  This is an important step that you should never forget!  And it is the only summer skin secret that will keep your skin healthy and radiant for summers to come.

3.  BLUEBERRY TONER.  Those few days leading up to the weddings, I mashed some blueberries, and then gently pat the goo onto my clean face.  I then gently removed it with a slightly moist towel. Blueberries tone your skin so what is revealed over time is balanced skin… Perfect for summer make-up-less looks!

4.  OLIVE OIL & SUGAR SCRUB I used this scrub to moisturize and exfoliate the night before each wedding.  The result was radiant skin.  I love homemade scrubs because you know exactly what’s in it.  Don’t over-exfoliate ladies– once or twice a week (depending on your skin type) will do.  This was a great tool in order to remove some dry skin and reveal some new, glowing skin underneath!

All you do is add equal parts olive oil and sugar (you don’t need more than a couple of tablespoons of each), and mix together.  What you want is a slightly thick paste that you can gently massage into your skin (face & body!)

Now you are Summer Ready– be confident, feel beautiful, and look healthy this summer!  These tips have been a skin-savor for me this season, and I’m happy to say the red, irritated, dry skin is GONE!  What is your pre-wedding routine?
