Go GREEN!

Dear Diary,

In honor of St. Patty’s Day, Go GREEN…with COLORED denim!

This is a trendy and fashionable way to look festive and avoid annoying comments that lead to being pinched all day. Green eyes only grant you immunity for so long… Not only is green my favorite color (kelly green in particular), it adds a fun pop of color, and it looks great on everyone.

I struggle with putting my favorite white jeans into hibernation after Labor Day. (It always comes around too soon, especially living in sunny Southern California.)  I have several pairs, and they all look so lonely just sitting in my closet, waiting for their reintroduction into society – Memorial Day Weekend (aka my birthday!) Why not put one of them back into action with some pizazz?! All you need is a bucket, Rit dye, salt, and an article of clothing wanting a pick me up.

— OPERATION COLORED DENIM —

1) Mix fabric dye according to the package instructions into an old bucket (bucket will stain). Dissolve 1 package RIT powder dye or 1/2 cup RIT liquid dye in about 2 gallons (approx. 30 cups) of hot water.

2) Add one cup of salt to the liquid to enhance the color.

3) Immerse the clothing item into hot water (NOT the dye bath) and squeeze out excess water.

4) Then place the item of clothing into the dye bath. Gently move it continuously in the dye bath (using a stainless steel spoon) anywhere from 5-30 minutes (the longer you leave the clothing in the dye, the deeper the color).

5) Remove the clothing item from the dye and rinse it with cold running water until it runs clear.

6) Squeeze out excess water and allow the item to air dry on a clothes line or a flat surface.

7) Expect the color to run off the clothing for the first few washes!  Hand washing is best at first so the dye doesn’t transfer onto other items.

I have some bright, kelly green pants- like in the picture at the bottom of your post- will it get that bright kelly green color or will it be kind of drab like in the google pics I see when I type RIT Kelly Green?
