The Perfect Summer Lemonade

Summer Lemonade 4

Dear Diary,

Growing up in Chicago’s humid summers, nothing beat the heat like an ice cold glass of lemonade. I’m not talking about a packet you mix with water, that wouldn’t fly in my household… My mom is a perfectionist in the kitchen and she stands for nothing less than the real deal; freshly squeezed lemons, sugar and water shaken, and served over crushed ice. Our lemonade stands were legendary in the neighborhood – people actually drank the goods and came back for seconds.

Now that I live in the drier climate of Los Angeles, the summers bring a different kind of heat and unbearable at times in a different way  – especially when I travel inland for work (oh man! the Valley). While I drink enough water to fill a kid’s swimming pool, sometimes water isn’t enough to quench my thirst. So to be “beat the heat,” in my adult life, I’ve come up with a healthier version of my Mom’s Lemonade. It’s perfect for girl’s gathering, a day party or when you need a serious cool down. Now, if you are using this recipe to entertain and really want to turn the lemonade into a showstopper, you can add vodka or tequila to it. Sweet, spicy and spiked – there is nothing better in my opinion!

Here’s what you need to make a blender full of this lemonade recipe (serves 4 – 6 people)

10 medium sized lemons

15 – 20 ice cubes, basically fill the blender with ice

Liquid Stevia, at least 10 drops

1- 2 tsp of Cayenne Pepper

handful of mint for garnish

Fill the blender with ice. Squeeze the juice of the 10 lemons into the blender, add at least 10 drops of Stevia. You can sweeten to your liking, but remember Stevia is sweeter than sugar! Blend till it becomes a slushy consistency. Sprinkle cayenne on the top of each glass, for a little kick and a mint sprig. Serve immediately and enjoy. As the summer winds down, this is recipe that you simply must try!
