Old, Unusable T-shirt? (But once it was cute, and you just can’t bring yourself to throw it away.)

Dear Diary,

I don’t know if anyone else has this issue, but I…well…I don’t know how to put this… um… Okay, okay, I’m just going to come out and say it. I have a sweating problem.  And specifically my left one is usually worse. I guess there’s more sweat glands on that side?!  Strange, I know.  Anyway, I’ve tried everything from organic deodorant to the prescription kind and nothing seems to work! (Botox scares me.)

I constantly have to replace my favorite white t-shirts, because I turn the pit region yellow.  No one seems to believe me when I try to pull off the whole “It’s tie dye!” thing, not that anyone’s asking…  If you share this problem, or just want to recycle your clothes and be crafty, this is a project for you!

Take your old shirt and turn it into a scarf!

Scarf #1:

  1.  Take an old cotton t-shirt.
  2.  Grab a sharp pair of scissors.
  3.  Lay the shirt on a flat surface.
  4.  Cut the hem off the bottom and the top of the shirt – from the pits up – and discard.
  5.  In the remaining fabric, make several cuts, 1-1.5’’ apart and horizontal to where the neck of the shirt was.  Cut all the way  through the shirt, i.e. both the front and the back of the shirt will be cut.  You’ll be left with “strips” running across the  shirt.
  6.  Grab 3-4 shirt strips in both hands, and gently pull on them, stretching them out. The strips will naturally roll up.
  7.  Once you’ve done this to several strips, go crazy and use your imagination! Try draping them, wrapping one end with excess fabric, combining colors, braiding them, attaching beads, pins, old jewelry, etc. (I wrapped another Tshirt piece around all the strips to tie them together)

Scarf #2: (Fringe)

1-4.  Same as above.

   5.  With the remaining portion, cut vertical strips half way up, around the entire circle of fabric.  (Width of the strips is up to you.  I cut mine about ½’’ wide.)
